Finding photos of Roberts Cousins on Facebook

Through the Greene Connections (Pennsylvania) group on Facebook and the efforts of Candice Buchanan there, I've become acquainted with Lloyd Roupe, who has roots in the hometown area of my husband's grandparents. Recently this picture was posted of the students at Morris Grade School, Gilmore Township, Greene, Pennsylvania.

Lloyd identified the students as follows:

I noticed that several of the students in the class were children of Blaine Roberts and his wife Sarah (Cole) Roberts. This chart shows my husband's relationship to Blaine Roberts.

Larry's grandfather Sherman Russell Roberts was a first cousin to Blaine Roberts. So the children of Blaine and Sarah are second cousins, once removed of my husband. This group sheet shows the children of Blaine and Sarah, but I don't know the birth dates of all of them.

I labeled the children in the class photo so I could identify which of them were cousins of my husband. 

There's no way I'd have a photo of Larry's cousins like this without Facebook and the cooperation of the wonderful people who give of their time and efforts to share family histories!

Candice Buchanan led me to more ancestors

Our genealogist friend Candice Buchanan administers this "Greene Connections" group on Facebook. It addresses the history and residents of Greene County, Pennsylvania, the birthplace of my husband, Larry Jamison. When she added the above post yesterday, Candice called my attention to it and asked me to review the photos represented, which were actually uploaded to the Greene Connections Flickr page. 

In this photo my husband and I recognized his great-grandparents, John and Alice (Gregg) Roberts (#6 and #7) and two of their sons Arthur (#37) and Russell (#40).

John Franklin "Frank" Roberts, Teacher

We are so grateful that these photos are included in the collection as described here: 

The Arthur Ray Main Collection photographs were probably first assembled by Joseph Benson "Joab" Main [1871-1938] and his wife, Malissa Dell Kiger [1869-1941], and later passed to their son, Arthur Ray Main Sr. [1893-1954] and his wife, Toilie Frances Moninger [1897-1934], to their son, Arthur Ray Main Jr., to his son, Arthur Ray Main III, who owned the photos in 2007. Each generation likely added to the collection with photos from their own family and in-laws. Arthur provided the photographs to his cousin, Sherry (Main) Wise, who shared them with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Photo Archives Project in 2007.

We noticed that, while J. F. Roberts was the teacher at Oak Grove School in Ash Tree, Pennsylvania for the school year 1901-1902, the students included siblings Russell, Oscar (who went by Arthur as identified in the group photo above), Crawford and Goldie Roberts. As you can see by the chart below, Russell (shown at right) is my husband's grandfather and the Teacher, J. F. Roberts is Russell's first cousin. 

A search on Ancestry.com brought me several documents relating to John Franklin Roberts:
 (1) WWI Draft Registration 

(2) WWII Draft Registration, 

(3) Marriage Certificate for his second marriage, 

and (4) his Death Certificate

  J. Frank Roberts' death certificate reveals the sad circumstances which led to his death on December 17, 1952. He fell down the stairs from the main floor to the basement in a clothing store, striking his head on the cement floor and suffered a skull fracture. 

I'm grateful to Candice Buchanan for drawing my attention to this collection of photos relating to Greene County, Pennsylvania and asking me to review it for possible ancestor identifications. Not only was I able to identify Larry's great-grandparents, but I learned more about Larry's first cousin twice removed. 

Headstone: Elizabeth Freeland Roberts

 Elizabeth Freeland, as the wife of Robert Roberts, was my husband's 4th great grandmother. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Freeland. Elizabeth was born 23 April 1779 in Maryland and died 30 May 1862 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. In my RootsMagic database I had entered her birth and death years, but the inscription on her headstone gave me the actual dates, as it gives her death date and age at time of death. 

I discovered Elizabeth's headstone through the wonderful site administered by Candice Buchanan: "Greene Connections" . She links the grave listings to those found at FindAGrave.com. I followed the listing for Old Mount Tabor Cemetery, where I knew Elizabeth had been buried. Three years ago, on August 20, 2008, Roberta Hofmann had added this wonderful memorial to Larry's ancestor. We're really excited and grateful to find this photograph.

My husband's Aunt Mary Roberts passed away yesterday in Waynesburg, Greene, Pennsylvania. We love you and miss you.

Left to right in this photo above are Mary Cowell Roberts, who was married to Boyd Roberts, then my husband's mother and Boyd's sister, E. Irene Roberts Jamison, then Boyd's youngest sister Joyce Roberts Miller, then at far right is Hester Lily Day King Roberts, mother of Joyce, Irene and Boyd Roberts and mother-in-law of Mary Cowell Roberts.

Aunt Mary is pictured in this photo at right with her other brother-in-law Roy Roberts, brother of Mary's husband Boyd Roberts.
